Success or Failure Determined by Details
Attitudes, Everything!
The internet has countless articles about the misconceptions over search engine optimisation (SEO) so some might think that a set of standards would be the answer - but one expert disagrees.
Jill Whalen, who has been in the SEO web design game for 13 years plus, was being interviewed by Jon Rognerud on Entrepreneur.com on various topics (including SEO misconceptions).
However, when asked what standards there are in the business, Ms Whalen explained that there were none, adding: "Nor should there be".
"It's fine for organizations such as SEMPO [Search Engine Marketing Professional Organisation] to have standards that their members must abide by, but broadly - as industry - standards are not the answer," she explained.
"Every company can and should have its code of ethics, and its own way of marketing its services, but only organisations can have standards, in my opinion."
But given the number of myths about SEO web design and its growing importance in the business world, is Ms Whalen wrong and the industry should have a set of standards?

Google has been showing off one of its latest tools by revealing Britons' hopes, dreams and choice of vaults, but there may be a more practical search engine optimisation (SEO) use as well.
Insights for Search looks at a collection of Google searches and reports back on how popular search terms are over time - apparently many in the UK have had enough of the banking problems and are seeking safes and vaults.
Google of course shook off the credit crunch in a way that the world's mere mortal financial institutions can only dream of, allowing them to spend on PR for their tool.
"What people are searching for gives insights into the zeitgeist, what people are interested in and what concerns them," product manager Elan Dekel said.
"And the best thing about this tool is that it's free for anyone to use, so you can learn more about past and current trends and break down data by geography and category."
So with all this information on search terms at hand, is the tool useful for choosing keywords for SEO web design?
Business Feet deliver targeted results through internet marketing and SEO web design
As search engines have gotten better at discovering web content in many forms, manually submitting to them has become less of a focus. But content and distribution platforms continue to expand, and as they do so, the need for manual search engine submission remains an important, if changing, option.
In this time and age when people are more engaged to doing business online, it is a must to get the hang of things in line with multilingual SEO. The world is done with the fact of manually doing things just like in the past. But with the opportunities that modern technology has endowed each and everyone with, an innovative and modified solution is what they seek especially in terms of handling, maneuvering, and conducting their respective businesses.
You don’t need an SEO expert to tell you the important of content optimization for better ranking on a SERP. As the matter of fact, there are quite some optimizations you can handle yourself without the need of an SEO expert. Here’s a compilation of 13 critical SEO checklist compiled. Are your website following these guides?
More and more novel strategies emerge in an effort to gain an edge over the rest. The biggest issue is always getting on the top list of search engine results – either through sponsored links or organic searches.
However, it doesn’t matter how much you spend for your pay-per-click advertising, or how convincing your ad lines are, or how your web design rocks, or how much black-hat hidden keywords you have on your web page. As they always say, article content is the king and will always be the king.
Why are so many people struggling to attain good numbers of traffic to their site?
The simple answer is they’re not sticking with the PLAN!
When your site is ready, submit it to Google, Yahoo, MSN and ASK.com. Consider also submitting to other search engines but most of them are powered by these four leading search engines. Also submit your site to reputable high PR web directories, open directories, yellow pages and social bookmarking sites such as del.icio.us, furl, etc.
Having a good SEO or SEM onboard during the development stage can save countless of hours and dollars. Here are just a few examples:
When we are quoting development work for prospective clients we are often asked to develop a website that is search engine optimized. This usually brings me into a long-winded explanation on how developing a website to be search engine friendly is not the same thing as optimizing that website for search performance. Kind of like how building a car is not the same as making it ready to compete in the Indy 500. Those are two different tasks altogether.
robots.txt files inform search engine spiders how to interact with indexing your content.
By default search engines are greedy. They want to index as much high quality information as they can, and they will assume that they can crawl everything unless you tell them otherwise.
If you specify data for all bots (*) and data for a specific bot (like GoogleBot) then the specific bot commands will be followed while that engine ignores the global/default bot commands.
Formatting URLs properly for SEO purposes shouldn't be something beyond the capabilities of your website.
Site publishers want to be found by searchers. Poor URL construction could get in the way of this happy result, however.
SEO 2.0 showed a bunch of URL design mistakes that could be the difference between people discovering your site in search, and not finding it while it dies slowly from lack of traffic and conversion opportunities.
Long strings of letters and numbers, special characters, content management system-generated strings, and date based URLs may be efficient for site operation, but they're a double-tall drink of arrow frog poison for SEO.
Fortunately, SEO 2.0 provided a nice top ten list of URL design rules that should help the traffic-seeking webmaster pull in those visits. The main idea: keep it simple and readable by humans and machines.
As Tamar Weinberg of Search Engine Roundtable pointed out, some other experts are questioning its usefulness. Michael VanDeMar believes that the tool is useless for SEO, even though it shows exact numbers. Certainly the source of the numbers needs to be considered carefully. It may not provide an exact indication of the clicks your own particular AdWords campaign might produce. However for comparative purposes the figures would seem to be useful and clearly Google itself is the best source for Google click data.
Massive machinery wants to be marketed too
Selling a massive piece of machinery should be as much a part of search marketing as selling a consumer good like the iPhone.
Search engine optimization consultants used to primarily optimize html elements and page properties. Around the year 2,000 submission and reciprocal links became important parts of a search engine optimization strategy.
A search engine optimization consultant can more readily maximize visibility on search engines if you include them from the beginning of development. Most sites do not, this complicates matters especially if you decide design, copy and content are not to be modified during the optimization of the site.

I often get asked to review a web site and give quick feedback on the site’s SEO. The issue: Is the site doing well, or in desperate need of SEO help? To answer those questions, I’ve developed a speedy system to go through a site and take a quick SEO snapshot. I’m going to give that system away here. On a smaller site, this should take about 20 minutes. Even on the biggest sites, it’s never taken me more than an hour.
